Can Magnesium Boost Brain Power During Depression Treatment?

1

The Summary

This 6-week randomized controlled trial evaluated 40 outpatients (aged 18-50) undergoing fluoxetine therapy for depression. Participants received either fluoxetine alone or combined with 350 mg of daily oral magnesium. While both groups showed cognitive improvements, the magnesium group experienced significantly greater progress in overall cognitive scores, particularly in attention, memory, and orientation. Interestingly, although changes in serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels did not differ significantly between the groups, BDNF changes correlated more strongly with cognitive improvements in the magnesium-supplemented group, suggesting enhanced neuroplasticity.

Why this is interesting

Depression and its treatments can impact cognitive performance, and standard antidepressants often take time to clear brain fog. This study shows that a simple, accessible mineral—magnesium—can act as a powerful catalyst when paired with fluoxetine, specifically boosting memory and attention. It suggests magnesium helps unlock the brain's neuroplastic potential, offering a practical way for patients to accelerate cognitive recovery alongside traditional medical therapies.
