How Fitness Protects the Aging Brain From Cellular Damage

This study analyzed 648 older adults to examine how physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness affect Alzheimer’s biomarkers and cognitive function. Researchers measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, VO2 peak, amyloid-beta levels, and blood-based biomarkers of brain damage. They discovered that higher fitness and activity levels were significantly associated with lower levels of neurofilament light chain (NfL), a key blood marker of nerve cell damage. This association was especially pronounced in individuals who already had amyloid-beta buildup, suggesting that physical fitness acts as a powerful buffer against brain cell loss.

Why this is interesting

We have long known that exercise keeps the brain healthy, but how it combats Alzheimer's-related damage has been unclear. These findings show that exercise directly targets neurodegeneration—measured by the protein NfL—rather than clearing amyloid plaques. Strikingly, the protective benefits of fitness were strongest in people already showing early biological signs of Alzheimer's. This means that even if you are genetically predisposed or starting to develop silent brain changes, staying physically active can directly defend your brain cells against degeneration, helping preserve your cognitive sharpness as you age.
