How One Night of Broken Sleep Hurts Your Workouts

The Summary

In a randomized crossover study, researchers investigated how fragmented sleep affects muscle blood flow. Twenty healthy adults experienced both a night of habitual sleep and a night of disrupted sleep, where alarms woke them every 30 minutes. The following mornings, participants performed forearm exercises. While rapid blood flow from single muscle contractions remained unchanged, steady-state blood flow and arterial dilation during rhythmic exercise were significantly reduced after the disrupted night. This indicates that acute sleep disruption impairs the body's ability to deliver oxygen to working muscles during sustained physical activity.

Why this is interesting

While we know poor rest makes us feel tired, this study reveals a direct physiological mechanism: it literally starves your muscles of oxygen. Previously, performance drops were often blamed on mental fatigue or general exhaustion. Now, we see that disrupted sleep physically impairs blood vessel dilation and reduces blood flow during rhythmic movement. For fitness enthusiasts and athletes, this means even a single night of interrupted rest can directly limit workout capacity. Prioritizing continuous, uninterrupted sleep is just as critical for physical conditioning as the exercise itself.
