Healthy Plant-Based Diets Reduce Ovarian Cancer Risk

1

The Summary

Researchers conducted a case-control study with 1,031 ovarian cancer patients and 2,411 healthy controls in Italy to evaluate the impact of plant-based diets. Using dietary questionnaires, they calculated overall, healthy, and unhealthy plant-based diet indices. The results showed that participants who closely followed overall and healthy plant-based diets had a significantly reduced risk of ovarian cancer. Conversely, those who ate diets high in unhealthy plant foods faced a 78 percent higher risk. These trends remained consistent regardless of age, family history, or menopausal status.

Why this is interesting

It is a common misconception that all plant-based eating is automatically good for you. This research highlights that food quality is critical. Eating whole, healthy plant foods like vegetables and beans protects against ovarian cancer, but relying on unhealthy plant foods like refined carbs and sugary snacks actually drives up your risk. For you, this means simply avoiding meat is not enough for cancer prevention. To maximize health benefits, focus on unprocessed, nutrient-dense plant foods rather than highly processed vegan junk food.
