Vegan Mediterranean Diet May Ease Fibromyalgia Pain and Cholesterol

1

The Summary

This six-week randomized controlled trial compared a vegan Mediterranean diet with a traditional Mediterranean diet in 22 women with fibromyalgia. Both diets were isocaloric and matched for macronutrients. Researchers found that participants on the vegan Mediterranean diet experienced significantly greater reductions in LDL cholesterol and triglycerides compared to the traditional group. Additionally, the vegan group showed a significantly greater improvement in fibromyalgia-related pain scores. The findings suggest that a plant-based Mediterranean diet can quickly improve both cardiometabolic risk markers and physical pain in fibromyalgia patients.

Why this is interesting

Fibromyalgia is notoriously difficult to treat, often co-occurring with heightened cardiovascular risks and chronic pain. While the traditional Mediterranean diet is highly praised for heart health, this study shows that making it fully vegan offers superior benefits for both cholesterol levels and direct pain relief. For readers managing fibromyalgia, this suggests that small, targeted dietary shifts—specifically eliminating animal products while maintaining a Mediterranean style rich in whole foods—could serve as a powerful, drug-free tool to simultaneously protect their hearts and alleviate daily pain.
