The Summary
In a double-blind, crossover study, 17 endurance-trained men underwent 90 minutes of loaded treadmill exercise in 34°C heat followed by a test to exhaustion. Participants consumed caffeine paired with either a ketone monoester or a carbohydrate control. Those taking ketones showed significantly improved working memory accuracy and sustained exercise longer before exhausting (8.9 vs. 7.0 minutes). Heart rate and core body temperature did not differ between trials. While not all cognitive tests showed improvement, ketones effectively boosted specific mental and physical capacities under heat stress.
Why this is interesting
Exercising in high heat typically impairs brain function and limits stamina due to reduced cerebral blood flow and cardiovascular strain. Traditionally, athletes relied solely on carbohydrates for fuel under stress. This study shows that ketones, when paired with caffeine, provide an alternative energy source that enhances focus and endurance without increasing cardiovascular or thermal strain. For athletes, military personnel, or first responders operating in hot environments, this combination offers a dual-action survival kit, keeping the mind sharp and the body moving longer when the heat is on.
