Can Gut Microbe Transplants Help Treat Chronic Insomnia?

1

The Summary

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 80 adults with chronic insomnia, researchers tested whether fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) could improve sleep. Participants received either donor microbiota capsules following short-course antibiotics or placebo capsules. At one month, the FMT group showed a significant 13.9 percentage point increase in objectively measured sleep efficiency and reduced night waking compared to placebo. Benefits persisted for up to six months in patient-reported assessments. The treatment was safe, well tolerated, and substantially increased gut microbial diversity.

Why this is interesting

Insomnia is traditionally treated as a brain or behavioral issue using sedatives or therapy, often with limited long-term success. This trial provides striking evidence that the gut-brain axis directly influences nightly rest. By altering the gut microbiome through donor transplantation, researchers achieved lasting improvements in how well patients slept. While fecal transplants are not yet a standard clinic offering for nighttime restlessness, these findings open the door to microbiome-targeted therapies, suggesting that healing your gut could be a key to finally overcoming chronic sleepless nights.
