Daily Low-Dose Aspirin Won't Extend Your Healthspan

1

The Summary

The large-scale ASPREE trial investigated whether daily low-dose aspirin (100 mg) could delay the loss of healthspan—defined as the onset of cardiovascular disease, dementia, cancer, diabetes, or death. Researchers randomized 19,114 healthy older adults in Australia and the US to receive either aspirin or a placebo. Over a median of 4.7 years, 30.5% of participants experienced a loss of healthspan. Ultimately, the rate of healthspan decline was virtually identical between the aspirin and placebo groups, showing no preventative benefit.

Why this is interesting

Since chronic inflammation drives many age-related diseases, researchers hoped aspirin's anti-inflammatory properties might preserve overall health. However, this rigorous study shows that starting daily aspirin in older age does not extend your healthy years. For the average older adult, taking aspirin as a preventive measure without a specific medical indication is likely unnecessary and highlights the importance of focusing instead on proven lifestyle habits like diet and exercise to maintain vitality.
