Prebiotics Boost Beneficial Bacteria in Children with Diabetes

The Summary

In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, researchers evaluated the effects of an oligofructose-enriched inulin prebiotic on 68 Indian children (ages 8–18) with type 1 diabetes. Participants consumed 8 grams of prebiotics or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. While the prebiotic intervention did not significantly lower HbA1c levels compared to the placebo, it significantly enriched crucial short-chain fatty acid-producing gut bacteria, such as Bifidobacteriaceae and Lachnospiraceae. The daily prebiotic intervention was well-tolerated and safe, with no major adverse events reported.

While the prebiotics did not directly lower blood sugar, they rapidly rebuilt a healthier, anti-inflammatory bacterial environment in children with type 1 diabetes. These specific microbe families are crucial for long-term metabolic health and immune function. For patients and parents, this suggests that incorporating affordable, prebiotic-rich foods—like garlic, bananas, and oats—into a daily diet is a safe, simple, and practical way to support overall systemic health alongside standard insulin therapies.
