Researchers conducted a meta-meta-analysis of 81 meta-analyses, encompassing over 79,000 participants, to assess how exercise impacts mental health in people without chronic physical conditions. They found that exercise significantly reduces both depression and anxiety symptoms. Aerobic exercise had the most substantial impact overall. For depression, group and supervised workouts yielded the greatest benefits, particularly for emerging adults and postnatal women. Interestingly, for anxiety, shorter and lower-intensity exercise sessions were the most effective. The study concludes that exercise interventions of all types can successfully mitigate mental health symptoms across various populations.
